Cufflinks are, as their name implies, a way of linking the two ends of a shirt cuff. The cuffs are normally fastened inside-to-inside, rather than front-to-back (as happens with buttoned cuffs).
They originated several centuries ago, at a time when it was less usual than now to have fastenings that were permanently fixed to clothing. Even buttons were sometimes very valuable and decorative and would be used on different waistcoats, jackets and overcoats. Nowadays buttons tend to be utilitarian and, though they can be stylish, inexpensive. Cufflinks, however, have retained a highly decorative element and can be very costly items of jewellery.
They also remain very much influenced by fashion. The elegant engine-turned enamel ovals of yesteryear are still available as a classic style. But in the Sixties and Seventies the fashion was for very heavy, even crude, chunky cufflinks. Today men's cufflinks come in a very wide range, from the traditional slim ovals to large, angular pieces and some real pieces of bling.
It may take some searching, but with the help of the internet and patience it should be possible to find a pair of cufflinks to suit almost everyone's taste.
